Salver Guresi, also known as Shalwar Wrestling, is one of the ancient traditional sports. It is similar to Bangladesh’s traditional wrestling (Kusti) and originated in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey. Today, it is a popular traditional sport practiced in many countries worldwide. The sport can easily be arranged on a wrestling mat, both indoors and outdoors. Wrestlers wear short shalwars and compete barefoot. All techniques are performed in a standing position, and if a wrestler’s belly or knees touch the ground, the match is restarted. A wrestler is defeated when his back touches the ground while facing upward. Salver Guresi has been included in the programs of the World Nomad Games, Ethnosport Festival Turkey, and other international ethnosport festivals.
In line with this tradition, the International Salver Guresi Championship 2020 was held on 1–2 February 2020 in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey. The event was jointly organized by the Kahramanmaraş Metropolitan Municipality and the Turkey Traditional Sports and Games Federation, in cooperation with the World Ethnosport Confederation. The championship saw the participation of 300 athletes and officials from 43 countries, including Azerbaijan, Brazil, Bosnia-Herzegovina, India, Albania, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Italy, Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Japan, Bangladesh, and Canada.
