Kyrgyz Kurosh
The great oriental scientist and founder of modern medicine, Avicenna (Abu Ali Ibn Sina), who lived in the 10th century in Bukhara, wrote that practicing wrestling is one of the best ways to maintain the health of both body and mind. In the 14th century, Timur, one of history’s most prominent statesmen, used wrestling in his army for physical training and self-defense. It is well known that Timur’s army conquered vast territories and was never defeated. According to scientific research, wrestling is at least three and a half thousand years old, making it one of the oldest martial arts ever practiced by humanity.
Kyrgyz Kurosh is an ancient form of wrestling that originated in the territory of modern Kyrgyzstan and has now become popular worldwide. It was initially developed as a means of self-defense. The term Kurosh comes from two Kyrgyz words: “Ky,” meaning strong and brave, and “osh” or “esh,” representing the struggle between two or more strong men. Competitions can be easily organized both outdoors and indoors on a wrestling mat. Athletes wear loose white trousers, leaving the upper body bare. Competitors face each other, holding each other’s belts with both hands, although one hand may be released during the match. The wrestler who successfully throws their opponent onto their shoulder is declared the winner. Kyrgyz Kurosh is now featured in the World Nomad Games and other international ethnosport festivals.
Under the dynamic leadership of sports enthusiast Md Al Mamun, Kyrgyz Kurosh was introduced to Bangladesh for the first time in 2018. Bangladesh achieved an affiliation certificate from the International Kyrgyz Kurosh Federation, Kyrgyzstan, and participated in the 3rd World Nomad Games 2018, held in the beautiful city of Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan. In 2019, the Bangladesh team took part in the Asian Kyrgyz Kurosh Championship in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, held from 26–28 November 2019, organized by the Kyrgyz Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the International Kyrgyz Kurosh Federation.
